Information Report

Sugata Mitra: Agent of Change

Isn't it amazing how one man can change thousands of lives. Professor Sugata Mitra is a man who made some of those changes, the man who introduced computers and technology to a whole new audience. His experiment has made massive changes in children's lives, especially the ones who are living in poverty and have never touched a computer before.

This thinking has made him an agent of change.  An agent of change is someone who is inspired to make a difference in the world. He has made that difference by inspiring children to learn by opening the door to learning digitally by giving them the tools to learn with.

Sugata Mitra went to one of the poorest places in India, and outside of a slum he installed something that has become known as the ‘Hole in the Wall. It was a normal computer that was placed into the wall so that the children in India could explore the device.  The Hole In The Wall experiment continues to change a lot of lives for children. It helps them to work collaboratively and improve their English and their computer skills.

Another way that the children learn is with the  “Granny Cloud”. The Granny Cloud is a group of grandmothers in England who volunteer to help children in other parts of the world over Skype.  They teach in special way.  Granny clouds encourage, praise and guide the children but they do not actually tell them how to do stuff.

These experiments show that in the future the teacher may be replaced by the computer. It also means the kids in places where people don’t want to go and teach will no longer miss out on walking down the exciting pathway of learning because of the changes made by Professor Sugata Mitra.

Describe plan using maths language

  • We positioned the desks behind each other because we wanted it to look a little bit like the olden days.
  • We rotated Mrs Andersons desk around so it’s facing the window and so she can have some fresh air and a great view
  • We used Metre rulers to measure the classroom
  • We scaled the classroom down from metres to centimetres so it could fit on the paper
  • We put group desks in front of the teachers desk because they might need help.
  • We changes the position of the maths shelf and the dictionary shelf and swapped it around
  • Instead of putting the math shelf in between the dictionary shelf and the bookcase we put the bookcase in between the dictionary shelf and the maths shelf.

Say what you did:
Miss Corbett explained to us what architecture is by using a demonstration of her sisters architecture work.

Soon after Miss Corbett wrote up on the board how big our classroom was then explained what our first task was that we had to do which was to make a scaled map drawing of our classroom.

My group and I found all the equipment that we needed and then got measuring with our metre rulers. The first thing we measured was the desk we measured how long it was and how wide they were. Afterwards we started to measure other things like the door, the computer desks. the whiteboard. teachers cupboard, teachers desk, the rubbish bin, the filing container, netbook  cupboards, the dictionary shelf, the bookcase, and the maths shelf.

Soon after most of my group and I scaled down the measurements so that it would be the right fit for our piece of paper e.g. if the maths shelf measured 240cm we would narrow it down to 24 cm.

We then had a choice of what coloured paper we wanted to use then cut the right measurements out and glued it onto the paper in the correct place to how our classroom looks.  Mrs Anderson then printed out some labels for us to stick onto the cut out pieces of papers so that we knew which object was which.

Our second task was to turn the cardboard around and do the exact same thing but change the position of classroom around for how we wanted it to look.

After a while we finally finished and they looked AWESOME!

Persuasive Language features

L.I- To unpack language features found in persuasive writing

You are trying to persuade schools that punishments of 1900 make students more focused in class.

Rhetorical question:
- How would you feel if the children in your class disrespected you?

Repetition:
- Remember how you got treated at school?, Remember how you were?

Emotive language:
- We are hardworking tired, staff members that try to make these children be the best that they can be.

Exaggeration:
- If you talk one more time I will strap you so hard your parents will hear you from here.

Facts and statistics:
- 95% of teachers think that we should bring back punishments to school.

Groups of three:
- These children are naughty, obedient, and are always miss behaving!

Punishments in our school was unfair in 1900.
Rhetorical question:
- Do you like seeing children covered with bruises?

Repetition:
- Did you like hitting children, did you think it was fun?

Emotive Language:
- Children back in 1900 were scared, and frightened and they got hit and that was not fair!

Exaggeration:
- If hitting children comes back into schools I will scream!

Facts and Statistics:
- 95% of children think the 1900 punishing ways were not fair.

Groups of Three:
- Back in 1900 teachers were mean, strict and always telling us what to do.

I asked the little boy who cannot see!

I asked the little boy who cannot see, ‘And what is colour like?’ ‘Why, red,’ said he, ‘Is like the strawberries that I tast that are red sweet and juicy. I feel the yellow scrunchy sponge that sits on the bathroom tub, And blue is like a waterfall; hearing the pristine water falling. And pink is smelling flower petals on the dining room table. Purple is the feel of the slippery soap that smells like beautiful violets And orange is the taste of freshly made sweet orange juice; The colour green is lying outside with the soft fresh grass pressing towards my tummy.’ Candice

My Math Qult Poster! By Candice

Last term our class dyed, printed, designed, and wrote up a math quilt! We had to go home and find some photos of us and our family and bring them back to school, and glue them on our poster. We drew some amazing patterns ,then dyed the the parts we wanted too! We also had to print some pictures that are about us! It was super fun.
